If you are looking for budget friendly Christmas decorations for your dollhouse, look no further! I share all my tips on how you can deck the halls with minis from all kinds of fun items.

According to my daughter, it is never too early to decorate for Christmas! I suppose the same can be said for decorating the dollhouse?!

Just like decorating my house, decorating a dollhouse can easier get expensive, so I do my best to make what I can or buy things on the cheap. Today I am sharing all my best tips and tricks on how to decorate your dollhouse for Christmas.

Whether you are fixing up a dollhouse for yourself or giving it as a gift to someone special, miniatures are delightful and loved by so many. So be sure to have fun and look at your junk drawer with minis in mind!

Scrapbook paper

I bought some small packs of holiday themed scrapbook paper for their colorful and unique designs. You can use them in a number of different ways, too.

  • Roll small pieces up for wrapping paper.
  • Wrap small blocks of wood in scrapbook paper for gifts.
  • Make small gift bags.
  • Cut for dollhouse wall art.
  • Cut pieces off and mod podge on miniature wooden trays or furniture.

And speaking of scrapbook paper, you should also check out the scrapbook embellishments for the holidays. They include 3D stickers, washi tape, flowers and chipboard cutouts, to name a few ideas.

Broken Christmas decor

Assorted broken bits of Christmas decorations that you can use in miniatures.

This next tip is a fun one. Whether you hit the thrift stores or rummage through your box of decorations, look for broken bits, beads and baubles and reuse them for the dollhouse.

  • Metal ornament caps come in ornate designs and make pretty bowls.
  • Floral picks come in a variety of colors and sometimes have mini pinecones, small berries and greenery that can be cut off and repurposed.
  • Have decor covered in plastic bits of ice? The bottom of my Christmas bin is filled with those plastic bits and they look perfect for miniature ice.
  • If you have a fake Christmas tree, sometimes bits of greenery breaks off and can be used as miniature potted trees and plants.
  • Ribbons! I hit the clearance bins after the holidays and found sweater ribbon – yup, a roll of knitted “ribbon” that I plan to cut up and use as blankets, pillows and maybe a mini sweater!
  • I found several mini bells that must have fallen off ornaments, floral picks or anything Christmasy.
  • And as I shared before, you never know what you can find on the floor of a craft store during the holidays. Just sayin’…

Mini ornaments

Assorted Christmas themed mini ornaments for small trees.

Small tabletop trees are so popular now that small ornaments are easy to find. They come in a so many different shapes and sizes and make great decor pieces for the dollhouse.

  • Lanterns
  • Santas
  • Snowmen
  • Reindeer
  • Candy canes
  • Gingerbread
  • Nutcrackers
  • Wooden wall art
  • Brass musical instruments
  • Small bottle brush trees
  • Small pickup trucks
  • Mini wreaths
  • Pillows
  • Wrapped gift boxes
  • Poinsettias

You can also take them apart and use the bits and pieces that makes each ornament. They come in a pack of 4-6 and aren’t very expensive. Use them as is or paint them gold to glam them up.

I have used one of the lanterns to make a cute pendant light with balloon lights. You can find these mini ornaments at craft stores, Wal-Mart, Target and the dollar stores.

More ideas

Assorted Christmas themed miniatures from ribbons, fabrics and other notions.
  • Holiday themed buttons and puffy stickers for cookies.
  • Miniature gift bows meant for scrapbooks can used on mini gifts.
  • Glass Christmas lights for bottles.
  • Wood cutouts for decor.
  • Small plastic toys (like reindeer) can be painted gold for decor.
  • Old Christmas cards for artwork or mini embellishments.
  • You can also find holiday themed fabric squares in small amounts for quilting. Designs with small patterns and images work best for miniature pillows, cushions and blankets.
  • I found a napkin ring that was made with a bazillion mini jingle bells! I could take it apart or use it as a wreath.
  • Craft stores sell miniature figurines that can also be used a holiday decor.
  • The wrapping around Christmas themed pencils can be removed and rolled up to look like wrapping paper.
  • Use holiday themed tattoos, nail art and rub-ons to embellish miniature pillows, furniture, plates or anything else you can think of!
  • Nail charms and bling can make Christmas candies and cookies.
  • Holiday beads and jewelry charms can be used as is or in a DIY project.
  • I snagged a mini Christmas sweater that was originally used as a wine bottle topper or tree ornament.

Buy Christmas miniatures

And of course, you can buy holiday miniatures made specifically for your dollhouse. Yes, there are some ridiculously cute stuff out there and I have bought a few, okay several, Christmas minis.

Some of my favorite pieces are

  • I have been eyeing these mini Santa mugs on Amazon.
  • There amazing Christmas minis on Etsy made by hand or 3D printed by other mini makers like this mini tree cookie jar, these hand knitted mini stockings, these “vintage” kitchen crocks or some miniature Yankee Candles.
  • I love the miniature toys from Mini brands, as well as Worlds Smallest Toys. You can find them on Amazon, Target, Wal-Mart and Five Below.
  • Ok, so this next one is not made specifically for dollhouse, but some Hallmark Keepsake ornaments are perfect for the dollhouse, like this Santa beer stein. I found many other cute ornaments like these at my favorite antique mall, too.
  • And of course, you can find lots of Christmas miniatures at your local craft store like Michaels and Hobby Lobby. And don’t forget to check your local thrift and antique stores.

Well, if you weren’t in the holiday mood when you started reading this post, I hope you are feeling festive now that you’re done! Be sure to check out some of my tutorials where you can make your own dollhouse Christmas decorations.
